Hi Dima

Leeupan near Secunda is the one.

Thanx guys.
One more stupid question:
Google map shows at least three Leeupan - in Mpumalanga (next to Embalenhle and Secunda), in Benoni and next to Delareyville.
Judging from windguru it should be one next to Embalenhle and Secunda. Is that correct?
I'm getting confused with same names for different places. And I though Taiwan was bad with that :D
With Sterkfontein there also few places, but only one with the water. So it's easy.
David, what is so special about Sterkfotein?

Hi Dima

At the Vaal Dam there is an extensive area to launch at Deneysville called Pink flats, a public open space on the western side of the dam.

Various yacht clubs on the eastern side with a number of small bays where you can find some slick when wind is up properly.

Hi Dima

Leeupan dam offers smooth to choppy conditions.
Best wind is the NW as it blow cross shore, SW blows on shore. The launching and landing area is big enough and open, no trees. The kiting spot is on the eastern side of the dam. I'm not sure how to get to leeupan from JHB, but when you get to the dirt road it's the first gate on the left, R30 will get you in. Follow the road next to the dam for about a km till the launching area.
I agree with you about Durban, but sterkfontuin is defiantly a spot you want to add to your list.

Take care.

Thank you Lynn.

Sterkfontein Dam is half way to Durban and Durban looks like much better place.
what sides of Vaal Dam and Leeupan (east, west, ...) are best for kiting? Also what are conditions for launching/landing the kite?

Hi Dima, Welcome to South Africa. Yes, Vaal Dam and Leeupan are the closest and a cool spot is Sterkfontein Dam-which is about three hours from Joeys, so it is good for a weekend and you can either camp or hire a chalet. I think a lot of us use Windguru (correct me if I am wrong) for our wind info. I can't remember what the best wind directions are for those three places....anyone?

Sorry for the link in my previous message. Didn't see pasting it and don't know how to remove it now

Hi guys!
I just moved to South Africa and will be based in Johannesburg. From what I found Vaal Dam and Leeupan are the places for kiteboarding around here.
I would appreciate any information, tips, directions and details about these spots. If there are other places close enough, please share too.
I have never kited inland, so would like to learn the difference between ocean spots (if any).
Thank you in advance. Can't wait to get back to kiting and see you on the water. - See more at:

Hi Tim. We don't have any North kites but stock a full range of Ozone, RRD, Cabrinha, Airush, Slingshot, Peter Lynn. We also have a lot of used gear of different brands.

What are you looking to spend? We have full used kits from around R8000 - R15000. All new gear would be around R20000. Give us a call 031 568 2644.

PS. Please be careful of buying VERY cheap gear online without researching what type of kite it is. There are a lot of cheap kites that are terrible for someone just starting out - and dangerous!

Thanks everybody! Will get gear sorted ASAP! If anybody wants to kite in the coming months, let me know! Tim
