Info: An hours drive from Durban central, Amatikulu Estuary / Lagoon, or 'Prawn Shack' as it's also known as, is another great flat-water spot with the sea next door as an option (although there are loads of sharks along that stretch of coast so not too many kiters go out there). Driving to Prawn Shack the first time can be quite an eye-opener as it's situated in a pretty rural area, but once you've been there it's no big deal.
Facilities: Plenty parking but try to park where you can keep an eye on your vehicle as there is a local element that can sometimes develop light fingers. There are no other facilities so you need to take everything with you (including toilet paper and a spade).
Wind: I've never kited there on Southerly wind so can't comment on that but it's good on a North as long as it has quite a bit of East in it - ENE. There is a line of tall trees that affect the wind if it is too Northerly (see picture). Can often be wind up there when there is no wind further South down the coast.
Watch out for...
- Often quite shallow as it is tidal so be aware of sand banks;
- As it is tidal, be careful near the mouth when the tide is ebbing or flowing strongly - especially if you are a beginner and losing your board often;
- Tall trees along NW side so don't get your kite tangled in them;
- Lots of broken glass on the beach;
- Theft can sometimes be an issue but doesn't happen very often - just keep an eye on your stuff;
