Kitesurfing, kiteboarding shop & school. Lessons - Durban, PE, J-Bay, Cape Town

Driving up to the Amatikulu Lagoon from Durban is a really quick easy drive, only 70km North of Ballito. The lagoon is a great flat water spot for Kiteboarding in KZN and the surrounding scenery is magnificent. A few of us managed to get off work early and arrived on Friday afternoon, but the weather was not that great with a light rain for most of the afternoon and into the early evening. Wind Guru predicted rain and not much wind for the weekend, but we had an absolute blast. The Hatchery was our choice for accommodation, I can honestly say that every cent spent at the Hatchery is worth it and if you are planning a trip up to the Amatikulu Lagoon make sure you book into the Hatchery, you will not be disappointed.

Saturday morning brought sunshine and no rain, and a max of about 7kts. As we were all very eager to get going we decided to haul out Stevo’s winch and do some winching. The winch is an awesome machine for those no wind days, it gets you on the water and is heaps of fun. (The interest around the Winch is amazing and it will soon be available to purchase through the Kitesports website.)
After enjoying an afternoon braai and more winching we retreated to the Hatchery for some lazy sundowners and an evening braai.

For some of us, Sunday morning was a bit tender (that is not including me) but with a gentle North Easterly wind and predictions for it to pick up, the guys seemed quite eager to get back down to the beach and pump up. We managed to get an hour session in before the wind dropped, for those who got on it quickly, luck was on their side.
After chilling on the beach, the guys decided they had to do something! After a short walk to the river mount the decision was to try surf/ride the current running into the lagoon. Well, what was decided was achieved, and the little experiment attracted loads of spectators on the beach. It was actually quite an amazing sight to see the guys riding the strong current from the ocean rushing into the lagoon.

All in all it was a great weekend away and we will definitely be organizing another trip to the Amatikulu Lagoon. We will book the Hatchery out for the weekend, so make sure to keep your eyes posted on our events calendar for the next trip dates.
